A Busy Month for KCK Rotary

September 2024 was a busy month for the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club!  In addition to a great month of programs, KCK Rotary members spent volunteer time in the community.  Members assisted with Rosedale Development Association’s park clean-up at Fisher Park in Kansas City, Kansas, and restocked shelves in the food pantry at Cross-Lines Community Outreach, also in Kansas City, Kansas.

At weekly meetings held at the Club’s new meeting location at FosterAdopt Connect in Downtown KCK, Club members welcomed several interesting speakers, including US Senator Roger Marshall, who shared information on issues being addressed in DC that are of great interest to the KCK community.  Additional dignitaries visiting KCK Rotary in September were District 5710 Governor Tamara Sevcik and District Endowment and Major Gifts Chair Roger Aeschilman, as well as local physician and author Dr. Chris Jenson.

In recognition of September 11th, in addition to DG Sevcik, local firefighter G Matz spoke to the Club and provided his story of working at ground zero in the days after 9/11 as part of a team of firefighters from KCKFD.  Acknowledging the abrupt change in tone following G’s remarks, DG Sevcik presented great updates on the District and her goals for this year, gifting sunflower seeds to all members.  The next week, after a short presentation by Mattie Vandel, District 5710 Global Scholar, Mr. Aeschilman led members in a lively quiz game about the District’s fundraising efforts.  That quiz game certainly released the competitive spirit of KCK Rotarians!  For the final week of September, Dr. Chris Jenson, author and former emergency medicine physician, spoke to Club members about workplace stress and burnout.

Looking ahead, Club members are deeply involved in planning for hosting Mayor Tyrone Garner’s State of the Unified Government address, set for Tuesday, December 10, 2024.  More information concerning tickets for the event will be released soon.

Fire Safety Month - August 2024

Our August meetings were a powerhouse of vital information, thanks to Rotarian and Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin.  We explored essential topics like smoke, carbon monoxide, and natural gas detectors, hands-only CPR, community paramedicine, and home safety inspections.  To learn more about home safety, community paramedicine, or hands-only CPR, go to www.kckfd.org.  For more information about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, go to www.kckfd.org/index.php/smoke-co-detectors.  The KCKFD’s efforts in leading community safety and health promotion are truly inspiring!

In addition to providing a great month of informative programs, Chief Rubin also championed the Club’s membership efforts.  We’re thrilled to announce that Andrew Novak is joining the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club!  Andy, who is the Deputy Fire Chief at the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department, discovered our club through the Chief’s invitation to the robust series of safety and community paramedicine presentations hosted by KCKFD.

Since 1998, Andy has been a driving force in the KCKFD, rising through the ranks from firefighter to driver to captain.  A proud lifelong resident of KCK and a third-generation firefighter, he brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to our community.

Welcome aboard, Andy!  We’re excited to have your expertise and passion on our team!

Return of Sumner Academy Choir Concert

We welcomed the Sumner Academy Choir back this week for their annual Christmas concert. We had not been able to gather together since before the pandemic. It was such a treat and they loved singing in the Memorial Hall Ballroom. Thank you to Ms. Becky Thomas, Choir Director, and the Sumner Academy Treble Choir. Karole Bradford, Club President, was able to snag a photo with these talented KCK students and teachers.

District Governor Visit and other August Happenings

This August held five Tuesdays, which provided the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club with five opportunities for meetings, with quite a bit of variety.

The KCK Rotary Club was pleased to host District Governor Stephanie Meyer for her official club visit and welcomed her to the Ballroom at Memorial Hall in downtown KCK.  DG Meyer shared her personal story as well as her vision for District 5710.  Luckily, DG Meyer left behind some of her infectious enthusiasm for this Rotary year!

The Club also welcomed a couple of writers this month:  local author Michael Kolich one week and Monique Hammond, a researcher and author from Minnesota, another week.  Mr. Kolich shared that his book was inspired by his time growing up in KCK, and he encouraged members to write their own story.  Ms. Hammond is a Rotarian from Minnesota who has spoken to numerous Rotary Clubs across the US and other English-speaking countries.  As a result of her loss of hearing as an adult, Ms. Hammond has been inspired to conduct extensive research on hearing loss and prevention of hearing loss to carry out her mission to “keep people of all ages hearing better, longer.”

Taking advantage of a lovely and atypical August evening in Kansas, the Club hosted a tailgate at Legends Field prior to a Kansas City Monarchs game.  The tailgate provided a great opportunity for visiting with fellow Rotarians and their family and friends.  Closing out August, Erin Stryka, the Executive Director of Rosedale Development Association, spoke to the Club about RDA’s goals and wonderful impact in the community.

Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club:  Focus on Education

The past few weeks this Spring, the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club had been busy with a focus on education.  And, for the first time in more than two years, we were able to welcome local high school students and educators in person!

As part of its annual Student Scholarship Competition, the Club hosted outstanding high school students from Wyandotte County schools.  One female and one male student from each school were nominated by their respective school’s staffs to compete for $1,500 college scholarships.  All the students exemplify the highest academic, service and character standards in our community.  We can all be proud of these Wyandotte County students, and we are excited about their bright futures.

Pictured below are the students who competed for a scholarship from The Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Presidents’ Foundation.

During National Teacher Appreciation Week, the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club also honored some very deserving local educators.  On National Teacher Day of that week, we presented the KCK Rotary Club’s Educator of the Year Awards.  Educators from Wyandotte County high schools were introduced by their respective principals who provided background on each honoree and the reasons behind that individual’s selection as Educator of the Year.

Finally, this past month the Club also received word about from the Hispanic Development Fund announcing the 2022 Class of HDF Scholars.  This year’s class of 415 scholars, the largest class in the history of the HDF Scholarship Program, was awarded a record of $896,450 in total scholarships.  Through our members and The KCK Rotary Presidents’ Foundation, we raised $4,000 which was matched through Cambio Para Cambio donor funds for a total of $8,000.  Because our HDF KCK Rotary Club Scholars attend educational institutions which also provide matching funds, an additional $5,500 in scholarships will be available to the students, bringing the total award for the six newly named HDF KCK Rotary Club Scholars to $13,500!

Todd Jordan, KCK Rotary Board member, and Wyandotte County Sheriff Don Ash

A lifelong Wyandotte County resident and Washington High School Class of 1971 alum, Sheriff Ash began his career in law enforcement as a Police Cadet for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department in February 1972, serving in many different roles until his retirement from the KCKPD in December 2006.

In 2009, Sheriff Ash was elected for his first term as Sheriff of Wyandotte County, Kansas.  He was re-elected in 2013 and again in 2017, making him the first person to be elected to three terms as Wyandotte County Sheriff.  With his decision not to seek re-election in 2020, Sheriff Ash will be leaving the office after more than 12 years of service as Sheriff and more than 47 years of service in law enforcement.

With this conclusion of his many years of dedicated public service, the KCK Rotary Club wishes Sheriff Ash all the best in his retirement!

Helping Friends of Kaw Point Park

The rain and storm on Friday made weeding at Kaw Point Park a lot easier on Saturday morning, August 21, 2021. We picked up trash and removed as much crabgrass as we could from the native gardens with volunteers from Friends of Kaw Point Park. It was the first time Fernanda, Matt and Melody had been to the park. For our long time members, who knew KCK Rotary member Mike Calwell, you know how tirelessly he and Laura worked to transform and maintain this park. This year Rotary International officially added Protecting the Environment as one of their areas of focus. Helping to maintain this special piece of land in our community is a great way to contribute to protecting the environment and honoring the legacy of Mike. Thanks to Ken Davis for continuing to encourage all of us to be a part of this magical place in our community. We hope to see you on Saturday, Sept 25th for the next clean up.

KCK Rotary Celebrates Women's History Month

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club welcomed several accomplished women as speakers at its weekly meetings.

On March 2, 2021, the Club was joined by Dia Wall, Edward R. Murrow and Mid-America Emmy award winning anchor at KSHB Channel 41 Action News in Kansas City.  Ms. Wall began her remarks by sharing that she is passionate about equity.  She cautioned that we must be careful about how we report or chronicle history and explained how she exercises that care in her role as a news anchor.  Ms. Wall emphasized that you should listen to everyone and should not require that someone look or act a certain way before valuing that person’s words or actions.

On March 9, 2021, Sharla Smith, Ph.D., MPH, an assistant professor at The University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and founder of Kansas Birth Equity Network (K-BEN), presented to the Club.  Dr. Smith’s current research focuses on maternal and infant health disparities.  She explained to members that societal factors such as poverty and residential segregation, together with unconscious biases, lead to race-based disparities in both infant mortality and maternal health.  The mission of K-BEN is to eliminate health disparities by increasing awareness of the high rate of African American maternal and infant mortality and connecting individuals with local resources.

On March 16, 2021, our speaker was Teneca Clark, General Manager of Production for Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Regional Vice President.  Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company is the local Coca-Cola bottler for Kansas and Missouri as well as for parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Oklahoma.  Mentioning that she works in a male-dominated field, Ms. Clark acknowledged the many role models whom she credits with leading her toward a career in science.  Her stated goal is to “change the default” in the workplace.  For young people to pursue careers in STEM related fields, they need to see people who look like them in those roles.

On March 23, 2021, the Club heard from Robin C. Henry, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of History at Wichita State University, who has written numerous articles and a couple of books focusing on her primary area of study, gender and sexuality and legal and constitutional rights.  Dr. Henry’s presentation focused on women’s suffrage and the passage of the 19th Amendment, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of its passage which occurred just last year.

Closing out the month, Club member Ashley Adorante led Club members in a fun evening of Virtual Bingo!

Our Legend, Jim Knight Passes the Baton

Jim Knight edited his first weekly bulletin for the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club on March 13, 1970.  Fifty+ years later he edited his last.  An excerpt of that War Whoop is posted below.

There are not enough words to express how grateful we are for his more than 50 years of service as Secretary to our club. Thank you Jim!

Volume 82                             July 3, 2020                                No. 01
This is my final bulletin after 50 plus years as your secretary and editor of the weekly bulletin. When President Dr. Dick Keim walked into my office and asked me to be the club secretary back in 1969, I never thought the position would last this long.  To say it has been a privilege and an honor to serve as your secretary is an understatement. I have met most of leaders in this community over the years, and been able to call them by first names, because of my position as your secretary and because so many of the leaders in this community have been members of this club.
I had to start by using an electric typewriter at the YMCA after getting off work in the evening. I had to take the bulletin to a printer nearby and then stuff the bulletin in envelopes. Tuesday evening I typed up the bulletin, Wednesday morning I would take it to the printer and that evening I would stuff the bulletin in the envelopes and Thursday morning would take them to the Post Office. For several years I was using first class stamps.  Went to a Rotary Conference and found that we could use a permit to mail the bulletins saving Rotary money over the years. The permit cost less for the year than a month of first class stamps.
Then Greg Shondell introduced email to Rotary in 2006. I was not sure that email was the way to go. I did not understand the computer and still don’t as Greg and Terry Robinson will tell you. By that time I had purchased my own electric typewriter, which I still have stowed away in my closet. To my amazement the computer was well received by members, at least I did not get many complaints. There were many days during the winter months that I looked out my window at the snow and thought about printing the bulletin and was happy to send it by email.  I was so thankful that I did not have get out in the weather and drive to the post office.
When I became secretary, Abe Shapiro was our Sgt at Arms for many years. Abe was a true Rotarian as he would come early and stay after a meeting (many meetings). After Abe died, Rosemary Podrebarac volunteered or was elected to the position as the Sgt at Arms (not sure which). What a blessing she has been, covering for me when I was sick, out of town, printing the bulletin, just doing my job when it needed to be done. For some reason, someone has always stepped in when I needed help. Bill Strumillo has been faithful in coming in and staying late in putting out the materials each week. There are so many Rotarians that I could thank for staying around and picking up the materials each week. You know who you are. Many times when I was late in getting ready for a meeting, a Rotarian would step in and help.
Again I want to thank Greg Shondell and Terry Robinson for their endless hours of working with me on the computer. I am sure without their help our club would still be behind times. Thanks to Rosemary for bailing me out at the last minute so many times. And thanks to the presidents of the club for being patient with me over the years.  And lastly, thanks to my wife Eva for proofreading spelling errors in the bulletin for so many years.

2020 - Student Scholarship Winners

The Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club has announced the winners of its annual Student Scholarship Contest.  Due to the pandemic, the students joined Club members at one of the Club’s weekly Zoom meetings to make their presentations.  Each participating student had the opportunity to make a virtual introduction to Club members and describe his or her activities and goals for the future.

For 2020, the Club awarded $1,500 college scholarships to Miles Lockridge of Piper High School and Jamike Unoke of Piper High School and $750 college scholarships to Jonathan Palmgren of Turner High School and Karla Alvarado of Wyandotte High School.  The Club awards these scholarships to the top female and male students who participate in the Club’s scholarship speech contest.  These students competed with other outstanding high school students from Wyandotte County high schools.  All the students exemplify the highest academic, service and character standards in our community.  We can all be proud of what Wyandotte County has helped produce in these students.  The Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club congratulates them and wishes them the best in their pursuit of higher education.

2020: Virtual - The New Normal

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged what we consider normal in our everyday world.  We all have been forced to do things differently.  Instead of our weekly face-to-face luncheons, the Kansas City Kansas Rotary Club has moved its meetings to a virtual platform.  ZOOM meetings began on March 31st.
The club was worried about not being able to continue with its annual Student Scholarship contest.  With local schools closed for the remainder of the school year, there was no way to evaluate students in person. Thanks to to ingenuity of several members, the club hosted the male high school student presentations on ZOOM on April 21st.  Female students will present virtually on April 28th.  The top male student and top female student will each receive a $1,500 scholarship.

2019 - Spring Service Projects for KCK Rotary

Cross Lines Community Outreach

It's been a busy spring of service for our Rotary Club. On March 13, a group of 17 members helped to package food for homebound seniors at Cross Lines Community Outreach. Not to brag or anything, but we were so efficient that staff had to stop us a bit earlier because we had packaged over 300 boxes and they wanted to make sure the next group coming in had enough to do.

Rosedale Development Association

On the morning of April 13th,  six KCK Rotary Club members braved cool temperatures, trash, and thigh burn to help clean up 10th and Douglas and the HUGE hill on 14th and Ruby in Kansas City, KS. We collected 18 bags of trash and five fire extinguishers, three pairs of baseball pants, and one $20 bill that became a donation to Rosedale Development Association.  With lots of laughter and squats, we were able to help our friends at Rosedale Development Association make the neighborhood a bit cleaner.

2018-Puerto Rico Water Filters

Posted on Mar 11, 2018
The Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club along with the Village West Rotary Club partnered with Grandview Park Presbyterian Church in an effort to bring clean water to storm ravaged Puerto Rico. Ten members of Grandview Park traveled to Caguas, P.R. to work with Catacumbas Church to do basic clean-up, demolition and construction in support of the devastated communities around Caguas. Two members of the team were Dr. Dee Ann Richards Behrens, member of Village West Rotary, and the Rev. Rick Behrens, member of Kansas City, Kansas Rotary.  Just prior to the trip Dr. and Rev. Behrens learned of a need for water filters in homes and community centers they would be visiting.  Dr. Behrens contacted Rotary partner Jorge Coromac with Woodland Public Charity to inquire about the water filters he assembles and distributes.  Jorge gave the team a crash course in assembling and operating the filters made of simply plastic pails.  As a result of this effort, ten filters were distributed to community centers and homes in Puerto Rico.  Total cost of the project was $600 with $250 each contributed from the Village West and KCK clubs and $100 coming from Grandview Park Presbyterian Church.  Grandview Park will be continuing in partnership with the Catacumbas Church in Puerto Rico, raising money, offering support, and traveling to help whenever needed.

According to Chief Jones, upon arrival at a home under heavy fire, the two firefighters heard someone calling for help. They tried to enter from the backside of the structure, but due to the heavy fire, had to enter through the front porch of the building. Captain Huyett and Firefighter Rogers made entry to conduct a search.  As Captain Huyett entered the structure he could hear a faint noise. As he advanced towards the rear of the home he found a female victim. The two firefighters moved the victim through the burning structure contending with fire, heat and heavy smoke and were met by other firefighters inside the front door. It was there where they handed the victim off to other firefighters and she was transported to the hospital. They then turned their attention to fighting the fire. If these firefighters had not acted without hesitation, the female victim would not have survived.  The victim has since recovered from her injuries after several weeks in intensive care.

              and Mayor Mark Holland

During the mayor’s presentation, he talked about how far the county has come since the city and county governments consolidated nearly 20 years ago. He went on to say that many challenges still lie ahead for our local government. He commented that property taxes have dropped this past year and he is working for another decrease this summer.  He touched on the American Royal coming to Wyandotte County, the construction of the Amazon distribution which will employ 1,500 new jobs when open, and the continued expansion of the General Motors Plant and the Kansas University Medical Center.  A big concern for Mayor Holland is the blight and poverty that still exists in the county, which will be a continued focus.

2015 Kansas City Day Funds Disbursed

Posted on Oct 22, 2015
The Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club participated in 28th Greater Kansas City Day on April 6th of this year.  The club has participated in every Greater Kansas City Day since its inception in 1988.  Greater Kansas City Day sees Rotarians and other volunteers selling special editions of the Kansas City Star on street corners around the metro, always coinciding with the Royal’s home opener.  The project raises money for the Rotary Youth Camp and other children’s charities.

Funds raised by Rotarians of the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club this year were split between PACES (a program of Wyandot, Inc.) and the Boy Scouts.  At the October 13th  luncheon meeting of the club, a check for $428.14 was presented to Angela Dunn, Director of PACES.  At the October 20th meetings, another $428.14 check was presented to Kyle Fulbright of the Boy Scouts.

2015 Missouri River 340 Race

Posted on Aug 06, 2015
On July 27th and 28th, Kansas City, Kansas Rotarians assisted with registration and logistics for the Missouri River 340 race.

The Missouri River 340 is an endurance race across the state of Missouri. This year, the race ran from July 28-31, 2015.  Competitors started in Kansas City, Kansas at Kaw Point Park and finished, some of them anyway, in St. Charles, Missouri. With numerous towns and hamlets, the course offers plenty of opportunity for resupply while in route. Participants are allowed exactly 88 hours to complete the course. There are nine checkpoints along the route where paddlers are required to sign in and sign out. To finish this race in 88 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year. There are no dams, locks or portages on this stretch of the Missouri River.

- Rotarian and Unified Government Mayor, Mark Holland assists in the formal start of the race.

- KCK Rotary Club President, Hank Chamberlain and his granddaughters helped with traffic control.

KCK Rotary Club's Community Beautification Project

The  Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club is dedicated to community service, and in the fall of 2014 completed a community wide beautification project.  The club purchased 1,000 daffodil bulbs, that were planted during September and October throughout the Wyandotte county area.  Daffodils are inexpensive, self-propagating and perennial plants that offer Spring beauty, yet are resistant to pests. There are a wide variety of species, which can make for interesting diversity in floral displays.  The plantings were done by Rotarians, neighborhood volunteers, middle school and high school youth, community organizations, and the Unified Government Parks & Recreation Dept. The plantings were carried out in chosen locations, visible to the community, in designated public right-of-ways, parks or school grounds, where the flowers will not be likely mowed during the year.  Those flowers are now making their appearance.

My Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

I am proud to announce a new biography about Rotary Founder - Paul Harris.

This fresh look at the man and his times is based on the discovery of hundreds of never before published letters, documents and exclusive archival sources.

For over a century relevant facts about his life and motivations have been shrouded by myths and misconceptions. For example:

For years the birth date for Rotary was celebrated as February 25, 1904 and not February 23, 1905. Why was the date changed?

Paul Harris almost let Rotary die in 1906 due to a failed relationship with a young socialite. How did this event change the course of Rotary?

Paul Harris refused to attend any Rotary International Conventions from 1912 to 1930. What were the reasons he stayed away for over 18 years?

Who were the men and women who influenced and helped him start one of the world’s greatest organizations?

I cordially invite all Rotarians to learn hundreds of new facts about “Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary” by visiting my web page at http://www.PaulHarrisBook.com where the book can be purchased by linking to either CreateSpace or Amazon.com. ($25.00 plus S&H)  A Kindle version is also accessible.

A special autographed edition can be ordered directly from me at a reduced cost of $21.50 total.  Please e-mail FredCarvin@PaulHarrisBook.com and I will send you a copy. Please be sure to include your mailing address.  Multiple purchase discounts are available. It’s a great gift idea for specific Rotarians, club libraries, or honored guests.

This book is not a general history of Rotary but rather is the story of one man’s life long struggle to find his inner self and how the philosophy of Paul Harris changed the world.

Certainly if you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.

Yours in Rotary service, Fred A Carvin – Past District Governor District 7190 (2002-2003)

This past April, the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club participated in the 26th annual Greater Kansas City Day.   Greater Kansas City Day, is a collaboration between the Kansas City Star, the Kansas City Royals and many metro area Rotary Clubs, including the Rotary Club of Downtown Kansas City, KS.  On Opening Day for the Royals, thousands of volunteers take to the streets to sell Royals Home Opening special edition copies of The Kansas City Star for a donation.  These donations have helped fund the Rotary Youth Camp and other local charities.
