Club Member Ken Davis will be our speaker today. An avid nature lover and bird watcher, Ken will be sharing some of his bird watching stories and triumphs. He will cover some basics about birding in the Kansas City region and provide some tools, resources and ideas for enjoying this hobby anywhere and anytime. The focus of the presentation is on learning about the different species, regional locations and special events for amateur birding.

Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America

Brandon Gawel, Kaw District Director for the Heart of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America will be joining us to bring us up to date on the Heart of America Council. Since December of 2020, Brandon has been serving the volunteers and the Heart of America Council in the Kaw District. Brandon has been in Scouting since he was a Wolf Scout in Del-Mar-Va Council in Wilmington, Delaware. Outside of Scouting, Brandon enjoys lacrosse, golfing, and exploring all that Kansas City has to offer. He also enjoys watching sports, especially the Philadelphia Eagles, which luckily are an NFC team, so that he can still root for the Chiefs. Shortly after graduating from Lebanon Valley College, Brandon started his professional Scouting career in Central Florida Council, located in Orlando, Florida. He served as a District Executive for Little Econ and Colonial District for three and a half years and as Lodge Staff Adviser for the Tipisa Lodge, prior to coming to Heart of America and serving in the Lone Bear District in 2019. He is currently also serving as the new Lodge Staff Adviser for Tamegonit Lodge. |

KCKCC Downtown Campus Project

Dr. Greg Mosier became President of Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) in 2018 and has been hard at work for KCKCC and the community ever since. Today, Dr. Mosier will be joining our Club to provide updates on the status of the KCKCC Downtown Campus Project. Dr. Mosier is a tested and experienced leader, having served higher education in the community college and university settings for almost 30 years. Experienced working in complex state and university led systems and the independent community college setting, Dr. Mosier brings a breadth and depth of experiences to the institutions and communities he serves. Previously serving as vice president of academic affairs at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Mosier returned to follow his passion of serving the comprehensive community college mission in 2015 as vice president of academic affairs and executive vice president, academic affairs at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC), prior to being named as president of KCKCC.

Kyle Haugen, a member and former President of the Rotary Club of Prior Lake, Minnesota, will be speaking to the Club about Rotary International’s End Polio campaign. Mr. Haugen has been active in Rotary for many years, serving as District Governor of Rotary District 5960 in 2017-2018, as a District Rotary Foundation Team Leader from 2019-2021, and as Region 36 Rotary Public Image Coordinator for 2021-2024.

Cross-Lines Community Outreach, Inc.

The Club's July 27th meeting will be a service project at Cross-Lines Community Outreach, Inc. We will be packaging commodities boxes at Cross-Lines from Noon to 2 pm. Members wishing to join others for lunch will meet at Breit's on the patio at 11 am. We do need to have club members sign up by July 23rd to participate, and we strongly, strongly encourage all members to wear masks while indoors at Cross-Lines, with the presence of the new Delta variant of COVID-19 now confirmed in Wyandotte County.

2021-2022 District Governor for Rotary District 5710

Vern Henricks is a Past President of the Manhattan Rotary Club and the Rotary District 5710 Governor for 2021-2022. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Manhattan Region Reimagined Quality of Place effort, as a board member of Thrivent Financial Kansas-Missouri, and as board President of Emmaus University of Haiti in Cap Hatian, Haiti. Mr. Henricks has spent 40 years in the development professions. Since 2013, he has served ad President and CEO of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, growing its asset base from $35 million to $107 million, expanding its community grants from $1 to $5 million, and increasing affiliate community foundations from two to thirteen. Please join us to welcome District Governor Henricks to the KCK Rotary Club and to hear what is happening in District 5710!

Unified Government of Wyandotte County officials named Karl Oakman as the new police chief for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department on May 7, 2021. Chief Oakman was sworn in as the new KCK Chief of Police in June, after spending nearly 30 years with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, most recently serving as deputy chief. Chief Oakman grew up in in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kansas, and is excited to return to his hometown as its Chief of Police. Join us to welcome Chief Oakman and hear his goals for the KCK Police Department. |

Michele Surber is the newly appointed Regional Executive Director of Caritas Clinics - Kansas, a ministry of SCL Health, which operates Duchesne Clinic in KCK and St. Vincent's Clinic in Leavenworth. Prior to joining Caritas and SCL Health, Ms. Surber served as Regional Director of Operations at Telecare Corporation in Alameda, California. She also held an administrator role for the Ventura County Health Care Agency in Ventura, California, leading county-wide health centers for employee health and homeless services and a seven-city outreach program providing care to clients diagnosed with substance use disorders, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. Ms. Surber holds a Master of Science in Child Forensic Psychology from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Trinity University.
