Winemaking and Grapes
Aug. 28, 2018
About Michael Amigoni: Michael Amigoni is the Winemaker for Amigoni Urban Winery, located in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms in Kansas City. Michael grew up in a small Italian immigrant community in central Illinois. His Italian family came to the United States from Milan in the late 1920s and his grandfather was a hobby winemaker during and after prohibition. Michael got his start in winemaking 20 years ago as an amateur basement winemaker. During his career as Chief Operating Officer of a small technology company, he was honing his skills and taking winemaking classes. In 2000, he and his wife, Kerry, established Amigoni Vineyards in Centerview, Missouri. After selling grapes to regional wineries, Michael and Kerry decided to open a commercial winery in 2007. Several years later, they expanded the business by renovating the historic Daily Drovers Telegram building in the Stockyards District of Kansas City’s West Bottoms. Michael now focuses on winemaking full-time, increasing production every year. Michael earned his MBA from the University of Illinois. He is the co-author of a technology book and has been featured in “American Wine Story,” a documentary film featuring winemakers across the country. About Amigioni Urban Winery: Amigoni Urban Winery produces small lots of dry handcrafted wines in the Stockyards District of Kansas City’s Historic West Bottoms. We focus on traditional European grape varietals, like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Viognier. Our locally-made wines are made from grapes grown in the Amigoni Vineyard, located 60 miles east of Kansas City in Centerview, Missouri and from grape-growers in the Lodi AVA, which is in the northern portion of California’s Central Valley. |
