Holistic Approach to Health Care Delivery

Founder of Kansas City Direct Primary Care, Dr. Edwards will speak about her unique approach to health care. Allison Edwards, MD - Bio Dr. Edwards aims to change the manner in which healthcare is delivered, putting the emphasis on keeping people well rather than solely stepping in and treating the sick (check out her Philosophy of Care here). Her professional interests and areas of expertise include public health, women’s health, preventive medicine, and emergency medicine. Originally from Lawrence, Dr. Edwards spent her undergraduate years at Drake University in Des Moines, IA before returning to Kansas City for medical school at the University of Kansas. From there, she completed her residency and served as Chief Resident at the University of Colorado in Denver, CO and is currently board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. In addition to providing care at KCDPC, she serves as a Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Kansas and a Volunteer Clinical Instructor for the University of Colorado, allowing her to continue to educate the next generation of students as well as volunteer at the JayDoc Free Clinic. In her free time, she loves spending time with family and pursuing hobbies including photography, travel, gardening, cooking, being outdoors, and reading the newspaper over a cup of coffee. |

Wesley McKain (Community Health Division Supervisor Unified Government Public Health Department) and Juliann VanLiew (Planning and Operations Division Manager Unified Government Public Health Department) will present on the Wyandotte County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The CHIP is a 5 year plan that brings together cross-sector partners to attack the social determinants of health, including: health access, jobs/education, violence prevention, safe/affordable housing. Municipal ID’s in WyCo and What it Means for Our Community

Alex Martinez, Safe and Welcoming Field Organizer, American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas) will present on their efforts to organize support for a Municipal ID program in Wyandotte County, which is a city (or municipal) identification card that can help the immigrant community, the elderly, the homeless, and people re-entering society after incarceration obtain a photo ID that may be used with law enforcement and to access basic services. About Alex: Alex Martinez joined the ACLU of Kansas in May of 2018 as the Safe and Welcome Field Organizer. Prior to coming to the ACLU, Alex was a Community Health Worker (CHW) for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences where he provided direct services to underserved populations through their outreach program, Score 1 for Health. Alex Martinez received a Community Health Worker certificate from MCC Penn Valley in 2015. Alex is a graduate of the Dental Champions Fellowship from Oral Health Kansas Inc. where he now serves on the Board of Directors. |
